In 1976, when audiologist and Major Steven W. Morris completed his service in the US Army, he established Acadian Hearing & Speech Services in Lake Charles. Your Child’s Hearing Care Is a Priority for Acadian Hearing
According to the CDC, hearing loss prevalence in US infants in 2019 showed 1.7 per 1,000 babies were born with hearing loss, while the state of Louisiana sees a prevalence of 2 per 1,000.
Because infant hearing loss has a significant negative impact on speech and language development, the state of Louisiana mandates screening infants for hearing loss. Your hospital typically schedules a diagnostic ABR/DPOAE examination with an audiologist from Acadian Hearing and Speech Services after your baby is born, but many of our clients come to us from states where early screening is not common.
Our concern for infant and childhood hearing loss has led to the development of one of the state’s leading infant testing centers for hearing loss, helping us detect hearing loss challenges before the age of six months in order to provide successful hearing care interventions that limit the impact of hearing loss on your child’s development.

At first, Colleen’s hearing loss seemed funny, but soon it became clear it wasn’t a laughing matter.
Colleen recalls, “For several years, I misunderstood what my family were saying. It started out as a family joke. ‘You need hearing aids. Ha!’ It got progressively worse.”
